I’m an historian specializing in Czechoslovakia, English Catholicism, Bible-smuggling and Christian-Communist relations during the Cold War.
I’m Professor of Modern History at Cardiff University. I founded and direct the Central and East European Research Centre and Czechoslovak Special Collection for Wales. I am a fluent in English, French and Czech.
My best-known books are Catholic Devotion in Victorian England (Oxford University Press) and Czechoslovakia: The State that Failed (Yale University Press).
I am currently writing a new book, Christianity behind the Iron Curtain, for Yale University Press.
