My book The Red Mountain is about the Roman invasion of South Wales up to the defeat of Caratacus. It is the first of a trilogy. I used as many of the tantalisingly few facts available about the invasion and wove them into my own story, using my experience as a journalist and soldier. For instance, Caratacus’s last battle in Wales is credited with half a dozen sites in mid and North Wales and even across the border to Ludlow. I looked at all of them and decided that none of them fitted the description given by Roman historian Tacitus, so I found my own. The book has already aroused a great deal of interest locally and I am currently trying to widen its apeal.
