Tŷ Newydd Secures Essential Grant for Restoration Works
We are delighted to share that Literature Wales has been awarded a grant of £209,954 from the Arts Capital Investment Fund by the Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Government towards essential works at Tŷ Newydd, our historic Grade II* listed headquarters and National Writing Centre.
The major element of the project is the restoration of the barrel-vaulted library, designed by the acclaimed architect Clough Williams-Ellis as part of the significant work he carried out at Tŷ Newydd for David Lloyd-George in the early 1940s.
The restoration follows the investigation we commissioned from structural engineers Curtins into the cracks that had appeared in the ceiling. They found, as we had feared, that the ceiling was unstable and at risk of collapse, but the good news is that the restoration project will address the structural weaknesses while also conserving the architectural integrity of this very special room.
We are extremely grateful to the Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Government for this grant. While the sum goes a long way towards covering the costs of this project we do have a small shortfall, and of course maintaining this historic house is a year-round labour of love that goes beyond these capital works.
