Walking, Thinking, Writing: turning a pilgrimage into The Crossway

In 2013 Guy Stagg walked from Canterbury to Jerusalem. On the way he visited Rome and Istanbul, and every night he stayed with monks and nuns, priests and families. A non-believer himself, Guy nevertheless gained a unique perspective on contemporary religion. In his talk at Gladstone’s Library, he will describe not only the ten months he spent on the road – the places he visited, the people he met – but also explain the five-year process by which this walk became a book.

Guy Stagg is a writer and journalist. After a turbulent period in his life he decided to walk to Jerusalem in what would turn out to be a ten-month pilgrimage via Rome and Istanbul. His account of this time – 2018’s The Crossway – was awarded the Edward Stanford Travel Memoir of the Year in 2019 and has been called ‘a poignant and poetic book’.
