Wales Book of the Year Focus: Carwyn Graves

Ask the Author: Carwyn Graves

When did you first realise that you wanted to be an author?

When I realized there were things I wanted to read about that no one else had written!

What inspires you?
People making a difference on the ground!

Who’s your hero and why?

The author of the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible!

Your favourite place on earth and why?

Tyddyn y Rhos. Family, creation, history, wildlife in one, in the depths of the West Wales countryside. And some years, the mulberry sweetens too!

What are you currently reading?

There’s always a pile of books on the table! At the moment:  Nelan a Bo by Angharad Price. Aristophanes’ work. A history of people’s attitudes through the Middle Ages called Beatrice’s Last Smile. Cerddi Dic yr Hendre.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Realizing that there are treasures within Welsh rural culture that were being ignored in fierce debate about the future of the countryside – and then a desire arises to convey those in some detail

Could you read a piece from it please?

Who should read your book and why?

Everyone who is passionate about a living future for the people of the Welsh countryside and its nature!

How does it feel to have reached the WBOTY 2025 Shortlist?

Amazing! Very pleased that I may have managed to put my finger on something in the book.

Do you have any other work/events in the works?

Yes! A new book which is a sequel to Tir.

In the words of the judges…

Praise for Tir
