Calling Young Welsh Writers! Apply to the National Writing Squad 2026-2027.
Closing date: 5.00pm, Monday, 15 December 2025.
Are you aged 16-18 and have a tale to tell? A voice that should be heard? Your story could start here.
The National Writing Squad is a unique opportunity for 14 young emerging writers in Wales to develop their craft, connect with professional mentors, and be part of a vibrant creative community.
What’s in it for you?
As a Squad member, you’ll:
- Work closely with published writers and creative mentors.
- Take part in exclusive workshops, residencies, and events.
- Share your work with peers and professionals.
- Build confidence and develop your unique writing voice.
Who can apply?
Young people aged 16–18 living in Wales, writing in English, Welsh, or bilingually.
No formal experience needed nor accurate grammar and spelling—just creativity, enthusiasm, and a commitment to creating stories. We’re particularly interested in hearing from underrepresented voices and from individuals who rarely see people like themselves reflected in the books they read.
How to apply
Just send us up to 1000 words of your writing or 10 poems, and up to 200 words about why you’d love to join.
It’s quick, simple, and could be the start of something amazing.
Please note that places are limited; this is a competitive programme designed to support Wales’ most promising young writers.
Spread the word!
Schools, youth clubs, libraries, charities – please share this opportunity with your young writers. Posters and flyers are available on request.
This programme is supported by Arts & Business Cymru’s Culture Step Programme and Cardiff University’s School of English, Communication and Philosophy.
