Representing Wales: Eligibility
Thank you for your interest in our Representing Wales writer development programme. We’re sorry that you are not eligible to apply for this particular opportunity, but please browse our website for more opportunities and for information about our projects.
A Short Statement on Eligibility
Our Representing Wales programme has been designed to offer development opportunities to those who have faced previous barriers in the literature and publishing industry. This edition of the programme focuses in particular on writers from low-income backgrounds, of which many will face intersecting challenges due to, but not limited to, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, gender identity, age and religious beliefs. We want to ensure that our Representing Wales programme reaches the writers that it has been designed to support.
However, defining socio-economic background is a complicated undertaking. To ensure a fair application process which prioritise those who deserve the opportunity the most, we have taken a commonly agreed set of socio-economic background measures (incl. SEC assessment and self-assessment) to help us to identify as objectively as possible applicants’ families’ socio-economic background when the applicants were 14 years of age. We are aware that the questions that we ask are detailed and personal. The information provided is confidential and used for eligibility assessment only. We also invite applicants to tell us in their own words why they believe they are eligible to apply for this opportunity, to ensure that the application process is as inclusive as possible.
At the end of the application form, we invite feedback on the application process, as we are keen to learn writers’ experiences so that we can continue to work sensitively and proactively in offering development opportunities to under-represented writers.
