Andrew Cockerill

Literature Wales is delighted to announce our first ever programme of Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre virtual courses for summer 2020.

We hope to reopen Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre in the near future, but in the meantime we are committed to providing opportunities for writers to hone and diversify their skills. Therefore, we will return virtually with both short taster courses, and longer courses that follows our usual residential pattern.

Over lunch on Friday afternoons, we will offer a taste of Tŷ Newydd with short courses featuring some of Wales’ best writers including Sunday Times bestselling psychological thriller writer, Clare Mackintosh, award-winning children’s poet, Alex Wharton, travel writer extraordinaire Mike Parker, and much-loved writer for children and YA, Catherine Johnson.

In Welsh, our tutors include Bethan Gwanas, Ifan Morgan Jones, Iestyn Tyne and Mari Emlyn.

Offering a whistle-stop tour of various genres and themes in both English and Welsh, these 90-minute courses will continue to inspire your writing during the lockdown.

Our two longer courses will run from Monday to Friday, and will feature award-winning writers as tutors: the first will look at developing your poetry with Jonathan Edwards and Kim Moore with a mid-week reading by Inua Ellams; and the second aiming to reboot your fiction with Vanessa Gebbie and Cynan Jones with a mid-week reading by Daisy Johnson.

Run on the video conferencing platform, Zoom, we will offer you a taste of Tŷ Newydd courses from the comfort of your own home. We will cap participants to small groups of 16 for the taster courses, and 10 for the week-long courses to offer exclusive experiences for our writers.

Visit our courses page to read more about the content of the courses and to book your place.

To celebrate the launch of our digital courses on National Writing Day, we’re offering a 20% discount as an early bird offer on all courses until the end of June (5.00 pm on Tuesday 30 June). Use the code virtualcourses when booking on the website.
