Partners in Germany and Wales have joined up to celebrate Welsh literature, theatre and music, as part of Welsh Government’s Wales in Germany 2021. This campaign aims to showcase the breadth of activity and exchange happening in Germany and in Wales across commerce, science and innovation, culture and the arts, education, alumni, tourism, civic links and sustainable development.

For the Voices of Wales event, Literature Wales and Welsh Government have come together with the Literaturbüro Westniedersachsen, supported by Wales Arts International and British Council Wales. Together, we will celebrate and showcase literature, theatre and music from Wales in a trilingual digital event aimed at new audiences in Germany and lovers of Welsh culture world-wide.

The evening will be a mixture of live and pre-recorded elements. It will feature a staged read-through of an excerpt of multi award-winning Welsh playwright Gary Owen’s play Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco, directed by German Dramaturg Jens Peters. The reading is performed by the German actor Soheil Emanuel Boroumand.

National Poet of Wales, Ifor ap Glyn, and award-winning poet, Mererid Hopwood, the first woman to have won the bardic Chair at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and Hay International Fellow 2021, will read from their poems in Welsh and English and discuss their work with each other. They will also take part in a live Question & Answer session.

Peppered throughout the evening will be songs by acclaimed Welsh musician Kizzy Crawford.  Participants will also be able to see some short films and images of Wales’ beautiful countryside, courtesy of Visit Wales and there will be an opportunity to revisit the short trilingual Plethu/Weave literature and dance film Aber Bach, produced by Literature Wales and the National Dance Company, featuring Mererid Hopwood and dancer Elena Sgarbi, with poetry in German, Welsh and English.

The event will be delivered via the Zoom platform on Tuesday 7 September from 6.00pm – 7.30pm (British Summer Time) / 7.00pm – 8.30pm (Central European Time)and is free to attend to audiences around the world. Translation from German/Welsh to English will be provided, where appropriate. To access the event, click here: https://online-live-event-de.zoom.us/j/85849347164
