In his new book “Lies, Damned Lies and the Carnarvons” -written for the centenary of the discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun, William Cross, FSA Scot, the author of several books on the Carnarvons of Highclere Castle ( the backdrop to TV’s ‘Downton Abbey’, exposes the many instances of unreliable history in the Lord Carnarvon-Howard Carter-Tutankhamun timeline.
In addition Cross addresses the unexplained mysteries before and after the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, as well as the plethora of inter-personal relationships that underpinned the event. Cross asks the difficult questions – such as who was it who deliberately covered up all the embarrassing truths about Lord Carnarvon’s chequered life, debauchery, and self inflicted disease, so creating deceit that has blighted history.
