Myth, Folktale and Fantasy
Tutors / Catherine Johnson & Marcus Sedgwick
This course will use popular and lesser-known myths and folktales as a starting point to influence new works of fiction and fantasy. We will take these ancient tales apart to find the elements that form the building blocks of every fantastic story: strong characters in otherworldly places, dubious morals, quests and adventures, metaphors and more. The tutors will teach you how to use these findings as inspiration to create your own epic work, by leading discussions and workshops as well as working individually with you on your own images, ideas, and words. With Tŷ Newydd rooted in the land that inspired the Mabinogi, the week will include plenty of free time to take walks down to the beach to look across the bay to the throne of Bendigeidfran the giant at Harlech Castle, or to the river Dwyfor where the fairies can sometimes be seen in the dusk…
This course will be suitable for beginners and the more experienced and could help writers develop their craft in writing short stories, novels, literature for young adults and children and developing stories to recite aloud.
