Cardiff BookTalk’s next in-person author event will take place at Grange Pavilion on April 26th at 6pm. Supported by Literature Wales’ Inspiring Communities Fund, it is open and free to all. ‘This Is Not Who We Are’ features two women who make a brief connection as childhood pen friends: Iris in her family home in Paris, France and Victoria in a refugee camp in Goma, Rwanda. After Victoria’s letters stop arriving, Iris is haunted by what she imagines her friend’s story to have been and years later, while working as a journalist in London, she attempts to track her down. The novel addresses complex legacies of colonialism and trauma following the destruction of community and family life. Sophie Buchaillard will be in conversation with Eric Ngalle Charles, writer and human rights activist, whose memoir is an unflinching account of his terrifying journey from the Republic of Cameroon to Wales via Russia after falling victim to human traffickers. After the talk there will be a chance for the audience to ask questions, as well as purchase signed copies of books by both Sophie and Eric.
