Tempo: Excursions in 21st-Century Italian Poetry is the first major 21st-century Italian poetry anthology to be published in the UK, featuring 22 of the most representative poets to emerge from Italy over the past 20 years.
Edited by poet, translator and academic Dr Luca Paci, and published as a parallel text edition in Italian and English, this anthology offers an extraordinary array of styles and voices. There is spoken word and lyrical poetry as well as experimental, concrete and rhymed.
A multiplicity of poets from different backgrounds: academics, working-class writers, editors, journalists, performers, travellers, and professional translators. The reader will discover a diverse range of poetry dealing with the topical concerns of identity, sex, politics, migration and race.
Editor Luca Paci says: ‘This anthology tells the story of contemporary Italy. The politics, culture, society, current affairs and history. The (melo)drama and tragedy. I would like to think that the reader will be more knowledgeable about the present state of Italy after going through the collection. In this respect perhaps the book could work as a sociological reflection.’
Writer Tobias Jones adds: ‘So little Italian poetry is ever translated and, even then, usually only the very familiar big-guns. Throughout this enjoyable anthology I relished not just the wealth of the Italian, but also the insensible (to me) sounds of so much dialect. Reading Tempo, it felt not like a collection of Italian poetry but of Mediterranean tongues. Each time I turned the page, there was something unexpected: not just the obviously different geometry of the lay-outs and languages, but also the subject matter – political verse, love poems, spiritual paradoxes, threnodies. With exquisite translations, this volume felt constantly inventive but also strangely restful.’

About the editor: Luca Paci was born in Novara, north Italy in 1970. Paci is currently the Co-Director of the Italian Cultural Centre Wales, the Italian Film Festival Cardiff and part of the executive board of Wales PEN Cymru. For the past five years, Paci has been teaching Italian Studies at Swansea and Cardiff University and he has a PhD in the subject. Paci is a translingual poet, editor and translator into English, Welsh and Italian. He has published a number of essays, articles and poems in English and Italian. Among his translations are La Ragazza Carla / A Girl Named Carla by Elio Pagliarani (Troubadour, 2006) and Bondo by Menna Elfyn (Ludo, 2021).

La prima antologia di poesia italiana del 21° secolo ad essere pubblicata nel Regno Unito, con ventidue tra i poeti più rappresentativi degli ultimi vent’ anni.
Curata dal poeta, traduttore e accademico Luca Paci, il libro è pubblicato con testo parallelo in italiano e in inglese ed offre una straordinaria varietà di stili e voci.
Spoken word, poesia lirica e sperimentale, concreta e in rima; una varietà di poeti di provenienza diversa: accademici, scrittori operai, editori, giornalisti, performer, viaggiatori e traduttori professionisti. Il lettore scoprirà una gamma diversificata di poesie che trattano di identità, sesso, società, politica e migrazione.
Il curatore Luca Paci afferma: ‘Questa antologia racconta la storia dell’Italia contemporanea. La politica, la cultura, la società, l’attualità e la storia. Il (melo)dramma e la tragedia. Mi piacerebbe pensare che il lettore sarà più informato sullo stato attuale dell’Italia dopo aver letto la raccolta. In questo senso forse il libro potrebbe funzionare come una riflessione sociologica.’
Lo scrittore Tobias Jones aggiunge: ‘ C’è così poca poesia italiana in traduzione inglese e, quando accade ci sono i soliti i pezzi grossi. In questa deliziosa antologia ho gustato non solo la ricchezza dell’italiano, ma anche i suoni insensibili (per me) di tanto dialetto. Leggendo Tempo, non sembrava di avere fra le mani una raccolta di poesia italiana ma di lingue del Mediterraneo. Ogni volta che giri una pagina c’è qualcosa di inaspettato; non solo la geometria ovviamente diversa dei layout e della lingua ma anche l’argomento trattato: versi politici, poesie d’amore, paradossi spirituali, trenodie. Con le sue traduzioni squisite il volume appare costantemente creativo ma anche stranamente riposante.’
