Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre arranges residential and day-long creative writing courses for primary and secondary schools, as well as for universities and other higher education establishments. Each course is unique.

We work with the educational staff to organise bespoke courses that complement the school’s curriculum, providing a choice of genres, content and tutors to suit the group’s creative aspirations.

“We brought 19 pupils to Tŷ Newydd to deliver some intensive revision sessions in the calm environs of beautiful Criceth. I’d just like to report that we had some great results from them. The whole group were on D grades or below at Christmas and with the help of the residential they achieved 69% A*-C. As a school, we are really proud of their achievement, so I’d just like to pass on our thanks again for the stay.” – Sarah, teacher at Woodchurch High, Wirral

Tŷ Newydd offers an inspirational environment, and the time, space and confidence for young people to explore their potential as writers. They will receive advice and mentoring from professional writers and enjoy many opportunities to feel, respond and share through writing.

There are group sessions, one-to-one tutorials, readings and some time for pupils and students to work individually on their own writing.

“By the end, I could really see the improvement in my writing and it helped inspire me to carry on writing and thinking creatively in my free time. I learnt that you should never have a specific goal in your head when writing but rather start with idea and let the work take a different direction. What was great was that it never felt like hard work, it was nothing like a lesson at school but more of an open creative space to bounce back ideas off others and receive feedback. The whole experience gave us a lot more confidence in our writing.” – Year 8 Pupil, Tonbridge School, Kent

Everyone lives at Tŷ Newydd for the duration of residential courses and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Pupils and students help themselves to breakfast and lunch and help, as part of a team, to prepare one evening meal for the rest of the group. We can house up to 20 pupils or students.
