‘Creativity and Time to Dream’ – A triple laureate event featuring Charlie and Lola creator, Lauren Child

We’re delighted to announce that the Waterstone’s Children’s Laureate Lauren Child will come to Cardiff to take part at a one-off “Triple Laureate” event. Famed as the creator of the popular Charlie and Lola series, Lauren will be joined by Welsh children’s laureates Casia Wiliam and Sophie McKeand.

The event takes place on 16 March at Cardiff Metropolitan University Cyncoed Campus in association with the School of Education and Social Policy. Literature Wales hopes it will inspire a new generation of children’s writers and educators.

During this bilingual event, all three Laureate – Lauren, Casia and Sophie – will talk about how they encourage a love of literature amongst children of all ages, and will share their own methods in inspiring children to believe in their own creative potential.

Lleucu Siencyn, Chief Executive of Literature Wales, said: “Literature Wales is proud to be part of this event. The development of writing and illustration for children and young people is hugely important, as early access to great literature can have a lasting impact. We’re thrilled to be working with partners to ensure that the future generations of Wales will continue to be inspired and bewitched by the power of story.”

About the Laureates

An advocate for visual literacy and the importance of quality picture books for children, the Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child, has been at the forefront of innovation in children’s books for over 15 years and has raised the profile of illustration as an art form for all ages.

“I want to inspire children to believe in their own creative potential, to make their own stories and drawings and ignite in them the delight of reading for pleasure. In an increasingly fast paced world, children need the freedom to dream and imagine; to enjoy reading, drawing and telling their own stories without value judgement or restraint”.

Casia Wiliam is the current Bardd Plant Cymru, a welsh-language scheme which uses literature to promote creativity, communication skills and self-expression. Casia believes that writing is beneficial to children and young people and is a safe way to express and discuss hopes and dreams, fears and troubles.

As the Young People’s Laureate of Wales, Sophie McKeand encourages reading, writing, conversation and communication within the young communities of Wales, particularly those from hard to reach and disadvantaged backgrounds. Sophie aims to inspire young people to believe in themselves and to have faith in their voice, and to realise they have an important part to play in the future of our nation.
