Cogan Diversity Picture Book Award 2019

Published Thu 25 Oct 2018 - By Literature Wales

Cogan Primary School Diversity Llais group is very excited to announce a new award, intended to celebrate diversity and inclusion in picture books.  They are looking for books which champion ethnically diverse, culturally diverse, disability or non-stereotypical themes and/or characters who represent these minorities. They want to read great books about all different kinds of people (Maybe other sorts of characters too).

Their award reflects the inclusive nature of Cogan Primary School. There are 17 different languages spoken by the children. There is a thriving Hearing Impaired Resource Base and many pupils with disabilities throughout the mainstream. Their pupils live in many different kinds of families.

From October 2018, the Diversity group will be reviewing all longlisted titles, narrowing them down to a shortlist in March 2019, after which as many children in the school as possible will vote for the winning title. The winning author/illustrator or author and illustrator team will be announced ahead of the award ceremony to be held at the school in June 2019.

Eligible books will need to have been published between 1st March 2017 and 30th September 2018. The PTA has already helped us purchase a number of books but there may well be books which have not yet come to our attention. UK Publishers are therefore invited to submit picture books for the award, the closing date for which is 10th December 2018.

All books submitted will be added to the longlist.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The award is for picture books only (intended for ages mainly 3-7 years) and may be fiction or non-fiction.

We are looking for books with strong themes of tolerance and inclusion or positive representation of minorities: ethnically diverse, culturally diverse, non-stereotypical characters or characters with disabilities.

To be eligible for the award, books need to have been published between 1st March 2017 and 30th September 2018.

Books can be in English or Welsh.

Books submitted for the award will need to reach us by 10th December 2018.

The shortlist will be drawn up in March 2019 and the winner(s) presented with their award in June. Books are voted for exclusively by the children of Cogan Primary School.

For the purpose of this picture book award, authors and illustrators will be deemed joint winners. There is no cash prize but a special one-off trophy is being created by the children to present to the award winner(s).

As many books as possible will be reviewed by the children on the dedicated children’s book review website www.toppsta.com

News of the award will continue to be publicised through their dedicated twitter account: @DiversityCogan

Staff and Governors of Cogan Primary School are unable to enter their own published books for the award.
