Call out for Delivery Partners: Reading Friends – New Project for Wales

Published Tue 11 Apr 2017 - By Literature Wales
We are delighted to announce that Literature Wales is about to commence an exciting new befriending project, Reading Friends, delivered in partnership with The Reading Agency and funded by The Big Lottery. Reading Friends will use reading to empower, engage and connect isolated older people, including people with dementia and carers.

The programme uses reading to start conversations by bringing community volunteers and vulnerable and isolated older people together to read socially either one-to-one or in groups. The Reading Friends volunteers will become part of a supportive and dynamic social network that connects lonely and isolated older people with friends, family and wider community networks. Reading Friends is a unique befriending programme co-produced with partners and vulnerable older people including people with dementia and their carers.

Literature Wales is calling for partners to test approaches to delivery of Reading Friends in Wales. The test project will last for a year from July 2017 to June 2018 and can be delivered by a single organisation, or a cluster of organisations working collaboratively. This project will be part of a test phase including four projects in England and one in Scotland. You can read more about the four test projects in England here.

The test project will receive funding of up to £10,000 as well as receiving online and face-to-face training for volunteers and resources provided by Literature Wales free of charge.

If you are interested in applying to be a test site for Reading Friends Wales please contact the Reading Friends Project Manager, Catherine Kennedy on for more information and an application form.

The deadline for applications has now passed and the Wales test site will be announced by the end of May.
