LEWIS, RICHARD
Richard Lewis, born in Ton Pentre, was a BBC television producer/director during from the 1960s through to the 1990s. Employed as a floor manager by the BBC in Cardiff, Richard rose steadily through the ranks. After spending time as a journalist, he became one of a talented team of TV producers-directors producing documentaries and dramas which were broadcast not only in Wales but across the UK network. Amongst his many achievements at the BBC were UK Network productions such as 'Dylan', 'Nye', 'The Extremist', 'Babylon Bypassed' and 'The Fasting Girl'.
In 1988 Richard walked out of the BBC as its Head of General Programmes after nearly 30 years of service. After then joining an independent television company, he oversaw the production of classic drama series such as 'Y Palmant Aur', 'Halen yn y Gwaed' and the BAFTA award winning 'Nel' on S4C.
Now retired, Richard shares his time between Llandaff and the South of France. His brisk but lyrical memoir Out of the Valley: The Autobiography of a Media Man (Y Lolfa, 2010) affords an insider's view of the innovative and experimental days of television production.
