Brian JenkinsBrian was born in South Wales in 1940, although he lived in Halifax, Yorkshire, during the war. He attended Park Terrace and Twympath schools in Pontypool, and then a Technical School in Abersychan, leaving education aged just fifteen with no qualifications.

Brian then worked in a bakery for two years and was forced to finish when he contracted dermatitis from the flour in his hands. A job working for the Great Western Railways as an engine cleaner by chance, at aged eighteen, led to a position as a trainee heavy goods mechanic. As part of his newly acquired trade, Brian studied at the Technical College of Monmouthshire for three years, obtaining a First Class, City and Guilds pass in Motor Vehicle Mechanics. He was to continue working in the motor trade throughout his life, later becoming a Member of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers.

Now retired, Brian lives in New Inn, Pontypool with his wife Dianne. They have three sons and seven grand children. With no previous literal experience, he has spent the last three years writing his autobiography Mill Road (Arima, 2008).

Mill RoadBrian tells his story of life as a child, living in a gas board cottage with no electricity or bathroom, sandwiched between a refuse tip and gasworks. The narrative takes us through trials and tribulations of life growing up in the South Wales valleys, with the successes and failures of school, college and work, interlinked with the joys and sadness of family life. This heart-warming, tear-jerking and entertaining autobiography is a personal record of Brian’s life, not only encapsulating his wonderful memories, but showing us how he become the husband, father and grandfather he now is.
