Sally Quilford was born (birth name Tracy Peploe) in Pontypool, South Wales, and lived in the Newport area until her teens. At the age of 14, Sally moved to Derbyshire. She left school aged 15 with no qualifications, but decided to return to school at the age of 30. By the age of 41, she had achieved a 2.1 hons degree in Humanities and Literature. She has also worked as a voluntary employment advisor at Chesterfield Law Centre, moving on to become an adviser with the Citizens Advice Bureau before ill-health forced her to take a break from volunteering.
Sally started writing in 1994, at first as a hobby. In around 2002 she decided to take it more seriously. Or to put it more bluntly, she became obsessed. Since then she has had work accepted for women’s magazines, Yours, The Weekly News, My Weekly and Best. Her work has also appeared in newspapers, and anthologies from Bewrite Books and Welsh small presses Leaf Books and Accent Press/Xcite Books, as well as appearing in several writing competition winners’ anthologies. Sally’s writing articles have appeared in The New Writer and Writers Forum. She has also been placed in competitions run by Leaf Books, The British Fantasy Society, Milton Keynes Speakeasy, Teifi Scribblers and Momaya Press, amongst others.
She is now a regular columnist for Writers Forum magazine, writing a column based on her the popular writing competitions calendar, which is on her website. She has also presented workshops at the Wigan Festival, one on writing flash fiction and the other about writers using the internet for marketing. Sally has been influenced by such diverse writers as Wilkie Collins, Kate Long, Ray Bradbury, Agatha Christie, Isaac Asimov and Frederick Forsyth, but finds inspiration in everything, and often draws her ideas from song titles and lyrics.
