Frances Thomas was born in Aberdare, but later moved to London and studied at Queen Mary College, University of London. She recently moved to Llandrindod, Powys. She has written extensively for children, and her books are published by Bloomsbury, Seren, Andersen, Pont, Bodley Head, Macmillan, Hamish Hamilton and Heinemann. She won the Tir na n–Og prize in 1981 with her children’s novel The Blindfold Track, again in 1986 for Region of the Summer Stars (Alun Books, 1985) and also in 1991 for Who Stole a Bloater? (Seren). Frances won the Tir na n-Og prize again for Finding Minerva (Pont, 2007) in 2008. She has also won the Scottish Arts Council’s award for a picture book for young children. Her first adult novel Seeing Things, was a runner–up for the Whitbread First Novel award in 1986.
