A journalist, scriptwriter, short story writer, novelist, Julia worked as a journalist in Australia, and later as Foreign Correspondent in India, Vietnam, Bangladesh and the United States. She was the winner of the Hyman’s Short Story Competition. Her first novel, The Water Horse, set in Wales and the Crimea, was published in 2004 by Orion. Julia's historical novel, set in India, The Fishing Fleet, was published by Orion in 2006. She was subsequently commissioned to write a further three titles.
Julia was 2010 Winner of the prestigious Prince Maurice Prize, 2009 Romantic Novelist of the Year and a 2008 Richard and Judy Bookclub Choice. She also won the Ryman’s Literary Review Award for first published short story for 'Apple Blossom Time', and was a finalist for the 2005 Waverton Book Award for The Water Horse (Orion, 2004).
Her short stories and articles have appeared in Literary Review, New York Times, Rolling Stone, Redbook, The Guardian, The Times, Good Housekeeping, B.B.C. Radio short stories, and in various collections including Honno’s anthology. Julia teaches feature writing on the postgraduate journalism course at Cardiff University and lives in Monmouthshire. She is a Member of the Welsh Academy.
