2011 Rhys Davies Short Story Competition

The winners of the 2011 Rhys Davies Short Story Competition will be announced early in 2012. The winners of the competition will be notified before Christmas. The date of the announcement will be posted here in January.
The 2011 competition has been judged by writers Trezza Azzopardi, Russell Celyn Jones and Siân Preece. First prize is a massive £1000 with a further ten equal runner-up prizes of £100 also available. Literature Wales has continued its partnership with BBC Radio Wales which will record three of the prize-winning stories for broadcast.
The competition is administered by Literature Wales and sponsored by The Rhys Davies Trust, a body which has as its aim the fostering of Welsh writing in English.

2011 Judges

Trezza Azzopardi was born and grew up in Cardiff. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. Her first novel, The Hiding Place (Picador, 2000), won the 2001 Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Her latest novel, The Song House (Picador, 2010), has been serialised on BBC Radio 4. She writes short stories, essays and occasional pieces for radio, and is a lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. |

Russell Celyn Jones is Professor of Creative Writing at Birkbeck College, University of London. His short fiction has been widely anthologised and he has previously been awarded the Society of Authors Award, Welsh Arts Council Fiction Prize, David Higham Prize and the Weishanhu Award (China). Russell’s publications include: The Ninth Wave (Seren, 2009), Ten Seconds from the Sun (Little Brown, 2006), Surface Tension (Little Brown, 2001) and The Eros Hunter (Little Brown, 1998). |

Siân Preece was born in Neath and attended University of Wales, Swansea. She has recently completed Cardiff University’s MA in Creative Writing with a Distinction. She writes short stories and drama for BBC Radio 4 and received First Prize in the 2009 Rhys Davies Short Story Competition. Siân’s first story collection From the Life (Polygon) was published in 2000. She is currently working on a novel and a second story collection.
