Reading Friends Wales – Test Site Announcement

Published Fri 16 Jun 2017 - By Literature Wales
Literature Wales and The Reading Agency are pleased to announce that Conwy Library Service has been selected to lead the first Welsh Reading Friends test project.

The selection was made from a number of high quality applications from all corners of Wales following a recent call-out by Literature Wales for expressions of interest in delivering ‘The Reading Friends Wales’ test project over the next twelve months.

An exciting new UK-wide befriending project, Reading Friends is delivered in Wales by Literature Wales, in partnership with The Reading Agency and funded by The Big Lottery. Reading Friends will start conversations through reading in order to empower, engage and connect isolated older people, including people with dementia and carers.

Choosing a test site was no easy task and the decision panel of 6 used strict criteria to ensure that the chosen test site is well placed and equipped with the resources, skills and enthusiasm required to work with delivery partners in Wales and to test a wide range of approaches to Reading Friends in a variety of different settings.

Conwy Library Service will be working closely with Age Connect and other partners to reach out to older people in Conwy who may feel isolated, lonely or wish to make new friends through the medium of reading and communication.

Literature Wales and The Reading Agency will support Conwy Library Service and Age Connect by providing an induction for volunteers who wish to become Reading Partners. Ongoing strategic, financial and operational support will be provided throughout the test period of 12 months from June 2017 to June 2018.
