Young People's Writing Squad

Academi is pleased to announce the launch of a brand new website for the Young People’s Writing Squads:

www.sgwadiausgwennu.org / www.writingsquads.org

The Young People’s Writing Squads have been developed over the past decade by Academi in association with the local authorities in Wales. They aim to locate gifted young writers – in both English and Welsh – in each authority region and introduce them to some of Wales’ leading writers and teachers of writing.

The brand new website offers information in one place about the Writing Squads and is aimed at Squad members, organisers, teachers, parents, writers or anyone interested in the Squads. The website holds information on what squads are and what they do, where they are and how they work. There is an overview of writers who have worked with squads and there are many examples of work from squad members.

In the next few months, we will develop the website further and are planning to add a Gallery section and a newsletter dedicated to all things Squads related.

To coincide with the new website, Academi has also launched a new leaflet, which has been circulated to all local authorities in Wales.

Academi was awarded an Arts Council of Wales Beacon Company Award in 2008-2010 and is developing and enhancing the Young People’s Writing Squads with this extra funding. Squad events for 2009 have included Young People’s Writing Squad Conferences, workshops at Hay Festival, the Urdd Eisteddfod in Cardiff, and activities are planned at the National Eisteddfod in Bala and in the Senedd to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the National Assembly for Wales.
