Welsh Poetry Competition

Sally Spedding and John Evans

Acclaimed crime and mystery thriller writer Sally Spedding has been announced as the winner of the Welsh Poetry Competition 2010. Sally, who is a trained sculptress, was born in Porthcawl and has won numerous awards with her novels and short stories which have also been widely published. Competition judge John Evans wrote that Sally Spedding’s winning poem, 'Litzmannstadt 1941' was "Excellently written. A narrative poem whose shifts and turns propel the reader through an episode in one of humankind’s darkest eras. Lyrical, emotional, inventive, and bursting with imagery."

Second Prize was awarded to Nigel Ormond for his poem 'Izzy' and Third Prize to Jane Fox for her poem 'Waiting'. A further seventeen poems were chosen for the specially commended section. A one-off prize was also awarded to 13 year old Jeno Davies for her poem 'Carmarthen'. All winning poems can be viewed on the competition website.
