Lynette Roberts 1909 - 1995

Following publication of two edited works, Diaries, Letters and Recollections (Carcanet, 2008) and Lynette Roberts' Collected Poems (Carcanet, 2005), Patrick McGuinness has written a commentary on Lynette Roberts for the most recent edition of the Times Literary Supplement (5562). The tumultuous life of one of Wales' most significant 1940s poets is uncovered through her work, her diaries and letters.

In McGuinness' words: "…When Roberts died in 1995, aged eighty-six, in a west Wales nursing home, her work had been out of print for nearly half a century and has gone unregistered in histories of British poetry…" However during the 1940s and early 1950s, Roberts had published two collections of poetry, a pamphlet of short stories, numerous reviews, essays, a verse play and a novel (with another unpublished). She received praise from T.S. Eliot and Robert Graves, and was well-acquainted with both Alun Lewis and Dylan Thomas
