2009 John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry

For many, poetry is a spoken and not a written art. It is about casting spells over an audience, creating an atmosphere, weaving words together to fill a room. Are your performance skills up to competition level? This is your chance to stand up and make your voice heard as we search for the best live poet in Wales.

Academi has been holding events in tribute to John Tripp, one of our finest poetry performers, since 1990. The competition is open to all: beginners and established poets alike. You have only a few minutes to impress the judges with your scintillating stanzas, vivacious verse and powerful performance.

A series of regional heats will take place throughout Wales culminating in a nail biting Grand Final with a First Prize of £500 on offer. The runner-up will receive £100 and an Audience Prize of £100 will also be awarded. Entry fee per poet is £6.00.

Heats will take place on the following dates:

Heat One - Thursday 8 October at Llanhilleth Miners Institute at 7.30 pm

Heat Two - Tuesday 13 October at Pontardawe Arts Centre at 7.30 pm

Heat Three - Wednesday 21 October at The Gate Arts Centre, Cardiff at 7.30 pm
Please Note - There are no places left for the Cardiff heat.

Heat Four - Tuesday 27 October at Venue Cymru, Llandudno at 7.30 pm

The Grand Final - Thursday 19 November at The Wharf, Cardiff at 7.30 pm

Prefer to listen? Whether you prefer to come along and listen or battle it out yourself, each event is guaranteed to be a night of entertaining and exciting new work in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Tickets for the heats cost just £3.00 / £2.00 and tickets for the Grand Final cost £5.00 / £4.00 (concessions for Academi Members and Associates).
