Southbank Centre is launching the first ever on-line, interactive map of the poetry that surrounds us all.
The Global Poetry System embraces the idea that poetry isn’t just in books, it’s everywhere; from lines of graffiti spotted on the way to work, to inscriptions found on a statue in the town square; from nursery rhymes we remember that were sung to us as children, to the inspiration we feel when we find ourselves in front of our favourite landscape.
GPS users can upload photographs, written words, video, and sound recordings that convey the poetry of a place, and then tell the world where it is, by tagging it to a location on the on-line map.
Academi will be one of the first organisations to get involved in the project. Over the coming weeks, we will be gathering content from a range of our events, and liaising with Southbank Centre to have it uploaded onto GPS before the site goes live to the public. Our contributions will be amongst the first to be viewed by the new users, who will then hopefully be inspired to contribute.
If you would like to get involved in GPS and become one of the pioneers of the site, please contact Louise Richards for further details: 029 2047 2266 / post@academi.org
Alternatively, register your email address at www.southbankcentre.co.uk/gps to be the first to find out when the site launches to the public.
